Explorations of Linkages Between Intercultural Dialogue, Art, and Empathy
2021
AbstractIn the 2000s, European societies have transformed quickly due to the networked global economy, deepening a European integration process, forced and voluntary movement of people to and within Europe, and influence of social media on culture, communication, and society. Europe has become an increasingly diverse and pluricultural continent where many people simultaneously identify with multiple different cultural and social groups. In such “super-diversified” (Vertovec in New complexities of cohesion in Britain: Super-diversity, transnationalism and civil-integration, Communities and Local Government Publications, Wetherby, 2007) European societies diversity itself is broad, multidimen…
Language as a site of search for common ground and power positioning in Chinese-Finnish negotiation
2019
This paper explores some language-related aspects in investment negotiation between Finnish and Chinese partners, such as language choices, the role of interpreters, and overcoming misunderstandings. These are seen as sites of both search for common ground in terms of positive politeness (affiliation) and power positioning in terms of negative politeness (autonomy) (Brown and Levinson 1987). This study is based on data obtained by interviewing individuals who work for state investment attraction agency and local governments in Finland and observation in delegation meetings. While misunderstandings occur, overcoming linguistic, contextual and cultural differences in understanding is possible…
A comparative analysis between Finns and Chinese : how communication traits affect self-disclosure in intercultural friendships?
2016
Self-disclosure, or the process revealing personal information about oneself to another, plays a vital role in friendship formation and maintenance, and cultured self-disclosure has been proven to be a powerful factor influencing intercultural friendships. Substantial cross-cultural research has shown self-disclosure differs among different cultural groups, but little research has examined what factors facilitate or impede self-disclosure in intercultural friendships. This research answers this call from a communication traits perspective. The focus of this research is to compare similarities and differences between Finns and Chinese in dimensions of self-disclosure in intercultural friends…

International students' perceptions on their adaptation to Indonesia and their intercultural relationship development : special focus on differences …
2015
Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, miten kansainväliset opiskelijat kuvaavat sopeutumistaan Indonesiaan. Sopeutumista tarkastellaan erityisesti niiden ihmissuhteiden valossa, joita opiskelijat loivat Indonesiassa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on lisäksi selvittää opiskelijoiden näkemyksiä siitä, miten kulttuuriset viestintätyylien erot sekä Englanti lingua franca -kielenä vaikuttivat ihmissuhteiden kehittymiseen. Tutkimusote on laadullinen. Tutkimukseen osallistujat valittiin yhdistämällä lumipalloja mukavuusotantatapoja. Tutkimusjoukoksi valikoitui 11 opiskelijaa, joista 10 osallistui AIESEC-järjestön työharjoitteluohjelmaan, kun taas yksi tutkimukseen osallistujista oli AFS-ohjelman oppilas…
Constructing the secular imagined community : a critical intercultural analysis of discourses of laïcité from Le Monde
2016
The concept of secularism encompasses numerous aspects beyond the regulation of relations between the State and Churches. Using a critical intercultural communication framework, this research project explores the interplay between secularism, culture, religion, identity, and collective representations. Specifically, this study focuses on laïcité, the concept of secularism used in France. Previous studies have criticized laïcité for being biased and contributing to inequalities between communities in France. The pervasive (and false) representation of laïcité as originally and exclusively French has also been criticized. In the light of the concerns raised by previous studies, this study set…

Intercultural empathy between Palestinian and Israeli individuals : a qualitative study utilizing grounded theory
2017
This study addresses intercultural empathy as a concept, and if or how it might be present among conflicting parties, specifically between Palestinian and Israeli individuals. Since there are many definitions of the word “empathy,” the researcher examines previous definitions of this term, how it relates to intercultural empathy, and then offers a singular definition for the purpose of this study. Previous research has examined empathy in relationship to other familiar words, including “sympathy” and “compassion,” though there has been little research done on the term, “intercultural empathy,” as a whole, nor has it often been studied between specific conflicting parties. Through interviews…

Moderating cultural effects in a higher e-education context? Supervisor's tone of voice in recorded audio feedback
2017
Providing feedback to learners on their writing assignments is one of the most important and time-consuming tasks that a supervisor performs. In e-Education environments, especially in the case of distance learning, giving feedback becomes more challenging because there are often no opportunities for face-to-face interaction. Typically, a supervisor provides comments to learners in written form via email; however, the use of recorded audio feedback (RAF) in e-Education environments has become a viable alternative. This work in progress reports on learners’ perceptions of RAF in a multi-cultural higher eEducation context. Our observations indicate that learners tend to have positive feelings…
